Back pain
                                               BACK PAIN

Your back is an intricate structure composed of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and disks — the cartilage-like
pads that act as cushions between the segments of your spine. Back pain can arise from problems with any of
these component parts. One of the top causes of back pain are sprains (overstretching one or more of the an
injury, poor posture, or improper lifting. Back pain most often occurs from strained muscles and ligaments, from
improper or heavy lifting, or after a sudden awkward movement. Sometimes a muscle spasm can cause back pain.
In some cases, back pain may be caused by structural problems, such as: Bulging or ruptured disks. Disks act as
cushions between the vertebrae in your spine. Sometimes, the soft material inside a disk may bulge out of place or
rupture and press on a nerve. But many people who have bulging or herniated disks experience no pain from the
condition. Back pain can also occur if your spine curves in an abnormal way. If the natural curves in your spine
become exaggerated, your upper back may look abnormally rounded or your lower back may arch excessively.
Scoliosis, a condition in which your spine curves to the side, also may lead to back pain. If a fever and a tender,
warm area accompany back pain, the cause could be an infection of the spine.

Acupuncture: This ancient Chinese practice has been gaining increasing acceptance and popularity in the United
States. Acupuncture is based on the theory that a life force called Qi (pronounced chee) flows through the body
along certain channels, which if blocked can cause illness. According to the theory, the insertion of thin needles at
precise locations along these channels by practitioners can unblock the flow of Qi, relieving pain and restoring
health.
Although few Western-trained doctors would agree with the concept of blocked Qi, some believe that inserting and
then stimulating needles (by twisting or passing a low-voltage electrical current through them) may foster the
production of the body's natural pain-numbing chemicals, such as endorphins, serotonin, and acetylcholine.

When Dr. Maya Alishayeva treats you for back pain with acupuncture, both local (at the site of pain) and distal
(away from the area of pain) needles can be used to help resolve the problem. Distal points are very important,
especially in acute pain. Often, needles can be placed in areas other than the back to give you excellent and quick
relief. There are many local points on the back and Dr. Maya Alishayeva will palpate your body to find the most
sensitive spots and needle those. Other adjuncts to treatment might include: electric stimulation of points, and
cupping. Generally, it is advisable to have frequent treatment initially and taper off as the pain diminishes. Herbs
can also be helpful in moving blood and reducing inflammation as well as strengthening a deficient condition.
Acute pain can often be cleared up in a few sessions. More treatments may be needed if there is an underlying
deficiency, or reoccurring problem, or sciatica.

Traditional Chinese Medicine works to restore harmony and energetic balance to the body which stimulates
natural healing and promotes health. Acupuncture is one of the primary modalities used and treatment is individual
to each patient.
