Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids symptoms - signs that you have hemorrhoid

General Hemorrhoids Symptoms

Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are similar to varicose veins you might see on a
person's legs. When bulging hemorrhoid veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn or itch. This
can become very painful, and bleeding may even occur.
Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins,
sometimes rupturing them.

There are two types of hemorrhoids (external and internal) and the symptoms for both are different.

External Hemorrhoid Symptoms

External hemorrhoids cause most of the hemorrhoid symptoms we commonly hear about such as pain, burning, and itching.
An external hemorrhoid is usually a form of hemorrhoids outside of the anus. Swollen veins will form a lump around the anal
opening and if a blot clot develops, the lump will become a thrombosed hemorrhoid. This is extremely painful and one of the
most obvious signs of hemorrhoid.

Internal Hemorrhoid Symptoms

Internal hemorrhoids are a lot less painful and thus its symptoms are harder to detect. This form of hemorrhoids is less
painful because of the lack of nerve endings inside your anal canal. The basic symptom of internal hemorrhoids is
itchiness. Another good sign of internal hemorrhoids is a slight bleeding (you’ll be able to see some blood on toilet paper or
in your toilet bowl) after a visit to the toilet.

When to see your doctor?
If you have bleeding in your stool, see a doctor to make sure the bleeding is caused by hemorrhoids
and not by something more serious. Bleeding in the stool can sometimes be a sign of a serious
condition, including colon or rectal cancer.
Hemorrhoid prevention - practical diet tips, toilet habits and exercise that can help prevent hemorrhoids
Some people say that prevention is better than cure. That is a wise statement indeed. We may not know it but many of our common habits are the main
causes of hemorrhoids. This article will show us which habits they are as well as list out a few tips to hemorrhoid prevention.

Diet
Your diet can play a big part in hemorrhoid prevention. If you are accustomed to eating a lot of processed food then you could have a higher chance of
getting hemorrhoids because of the lack of fiber content in those foods. The lack of roughage in your intestine means that stool cannot pass as easily which
leads to straining on the toilet.
Changing your diet to increase your intake of fiber such as bran cereal, fruits and vegetables are a start to hemorrhoid prevention. It is also advisable to
drink more water. Doing so will make your stool softer and will reduce straining.
Foods that may cause indigestion, gas or diarrhea should also be avoided in your diet.

Toilet Habits
Changing your toilet habit can also help prevent hemorrhoids. If possible, do not wait until ‘nature calls’ to visit the toilet because this means that your stool
may be dry and hard making it more difficult to pass.
An important part of preventing hemorrhoids is to minimize the amount of strain put on your anus. To avoid straining, it is actually better for you to NOT sit on
the toilet. Reading while we are trying to pass motion is also a bad toilet habit. This means that we spend unnecessary time sitting in the toilet when we could
actually be done in about 5 minutes.
Another essential and basic toilet habit is of course to wash well after you’ve finished with your business.

Exercise
A little hard to believe maybe but exercising is another way we can help ourselves to hemorrhoid prevention.
Sitting for long periods of time can also add pressure to hemorrhodial veins. It is understood that some of us have jobs where we need to be seated at all
times but there are a few tips you can remember to preventing hemorrhoids while doing your job.
In order to avoid unwanted rectal pressure, try to make it a point to stand and walk around for 5 minutes at least once an hour. This simple exercise can help
greatly with hemorrhoid prevention.
Having an active lifestyle can also reduce the pressure on your veins and keep you from getting constipated.

Hemorrhoids can be a very painful condition afflicting the rectum and anus and though people are embarrassed to talk about it, the fact is that it can turn
very nasty.
Various treatments are recommended for this condition.  Finding a natural cure for hemorrhoids might provide the best option if the condition is in its initial
stages and can be more easily controlled. This article gives information, tips and advice, to anyone who is looking to find these types of cures for
hemorrhoids.

Lady’s Mantle tea: This is a herb that you should be able to find at your local health-food shop. Brew the herb and apply the liquid to the affected area
using a cotton ball. This works well to relieve any inflammation and the knock on effect of that is that it helps to relieve pain as well.

Cayenne Pepper and Garlic: One remedy that uses these two ingredients is to crush a couple of garlic cloves and then add it to about a 1/4 of a tea
spoon of cayenne pepper. You will then have to use a fork to mix the two substances together until it has the consistence of a paste like substance. You
would then have to use your finger to apply it to the hemorrhoid. Be warned that this will probably really burn for the first few seconds.

Zenmed ziro and venapro are two natural treatments for hemorrhoids and these herbal remedies have been found to be very effective in healing
hemorrhoids.

Include flavonoids in the diet. Flavanoids are found in many fruits and vegetables and are known to give relief from the pain, reduce inflammation and
strengthen the veins.

Butcher’s broom helps shrink the swollen tissues and provides relief from the pain. This can be made into an ointment by mixing it with tincture or powder
and applying it to the affected area. Done in conjunction with the oral intake of butcher’s broom tea or capsules, it speeds up the healing process.
Hydrotherapy method of sitting in a tub of warm water for 10-15 minutes thrice a day will tremendously help in easing the inflammation and pain. Warm water
is therapeutic and the discomfort caused by hemorrhoids will lessen noticeably.
It is better to tackle this condition in the initial stages itself to prevent future surgery and finding a natural cure for hemorrhoids is very often the best course
of action as it can be done by anyone simply by following certain dietary precautions and unlike in medicines, less side-effects, in fact there are generally no
side effects at all.

There are 5 major patterns associated with hemorrhoids in Chinese medicine:

(as taken from Maclean & Lyttleton: Clinical handbook of Internal Medicine, Spleen & Stomach)

The following are listed from early onset of disease to late onset of disease…

Intestinal Wind: bleeding of fresh red blood before or after defecation, blood on the toilet paper, generally no pain or prolapse; often no clear systemic
pattern.

Dry Intestine: associated with chronic constipation.

Damp/Heat: associated with inflammation, pain, swelling and systemic signs of Heat; can be associated with all degrees of hemorrhoids.

Spleen deficiency:  loss of muscle tone or failure of the Spleen to hold blood in the blood vessels, hence the bleeding.  2nd to 3rd degree hemorrhoids
that prolapse when standing, walking, or with increased intra-abdominal pressure, need manual/physical reinsertion to the anus.  Accompanied with systemic
signs of deficiency.

Blood Stasis:  severe or continuous pain and distension, hemorrhoids may be irreducible or contain thrombus (blood clot), systemic signs of Blood stasis
will show.

Acupuncture Treatments:

Of course treating specifically according to proper pattern identification is necessary along with the following recommendations.

Common Points: BL 32 (Ciliao), Du 1 (Changqiang), BL 35 (Huiyang),

BL 57 (Chengshan), Erbai (extra).

The Taiyang Bladder meridian has branches that connect with the anus, the points above regulate the Qi of this meridian and remove the Blood Stasis.

Also, on either side of T7 there are particular hemorrhoid spots, these along with the lumbar-sacral region can be 7 star needled once every 7 days.

Ear acupuncture: lower region of rectum (anus), Large intestine, Shenmen, brain, Spleen.  Needles are retained for 20-30 minutes.  Treatment is given
everyday.

Moxibustion can also be administered when it is not contraindicated with the pattern.
